About ISKCON

ISKCON – International Society of Krishna Consciousness – is a global organization rooted in Indian vedic culture – was established by His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. ISKCON is a non-profit organization,  a Society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 having its headquarters at Hare Krishna Land, Juhu, Mumbai-49. It was established in India in the year 1971 and conducts cultural, educational and charitable activities running across its 800+ centers in India and abroad. The organization is operating over 120 countries and is instrumental in distributing Bhagavad Gita in every part of the world in more than 80 languages. While promoting Vedic ideals such as Satya (Truthfulness),

Daya(Compassion), Tapa(Austerity) and Saucha (Cleanliness), ISKCON members accept the principles of no meat eating, no gambling, no illicit sex, and no intoxication. ISKCON is at the forefront of canvassing for global peace while living in a sustainable environment centered around organic farms, cow protection and integrated value based lifestyle. 


Some of its activities are as follows: 

  1. Free food distribution (12 Lac+ free meals served to children in India and 3 billion meals served globally till date).  
  2. Book publishing & distribution: Nearly 520 Mn books distributed focused on self-realization, value education, personal and leadership development drawing wisdom from Vedic literature.
  3. Free healthcare through charitable hospitals such as Bhaktivedanta Hospital in Mumbai, the Bhaktivedanta Hospice in Vrindavan, mobile clinics and eye camps in India.
  4. Organic farming communities / eco-villages.
  5. Primary and secondary schools.
  6. Value education to adults and children in jails, juvenile homes, orphanages, slum areas among others.
  7. Higher education and scientific research.
  8. Skill development centers.
  9. Rural product manufacturing for livelihood generation.

Educational Activities of ISKCON

Educational activities within ISKCON are an integral part of its mission to provide holistic education and spread the Indian Knowledge System. ISKCON has a broad network of temples, schools, and educational centers around the world. 

i) Primary and Secondary Schools

ISKCON is operating 50+ schools established globally and more  than 8  schools  in India, These schools integrate regular academic education with spiritual and moral teachings and thus offer an exceptional mix of modern and value education in diverse underprivileged communities. Some of the schools in India are located at Vrindavan, Mumbai, Tirupati, and Mayapur (WB). 

ii) Institutes for Higher Education

ISKCON has established various institutes for higher education. For example the Bhaktivedanta College in Europe offers formal education in Bhakti Yoga, philosophy, theology, and various other aspects of Vedic knowledge. It provides courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There are other institutes like Vrindavan Institute for Higher Education (VIHE), Mayapur Institute (MI) and Higher education institute at Govardhan Eco-Village, Wada.

The Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies (OCHS) in the UK is an academic institution that conducts research and offers courses in various aspects of Hinduism, including the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition followed by ISKCON.

iii)  Seminars and Workshops

ISKCON frequently organizes seminars, workshops, and training programs on topics such as Science and Spirituality, Vedic philosophy, Bhakti Yoga, meditation, and other spiritual practices. 

iv) Research Institutions

SKCON’s research institutes, including the Bhaktivedanta Institute (Mumbai, Berkeley, Florida), focus on fields like cosmology, consciousness, and science philosophy. The Bhaktivedanta Research Center (Kolkata) preserves rare Vedic manuscripts and studies Gaudiya Vaishnava traditions. The Institute for Science and Spirituality (Delhi) explores the Indian knowledge system through multidisciplinary research.
